Insurance of Collectibles

on May 27th, 2011

Collectibles might have a great value, but are rarely insured properly. A coin collection, a set of paintings, limited edition garden gnomes, or signed props of one’s favourite band are but a few examples of valuable things that people like to collect.

Whether you collect for passion or as a means of investment, it is a good idea to have your collection insured. Granted, the money will not compensate you for the enthusiasm and emotional losses, but it might at least let you start anew.

Specific Coverage

Why is insuring collectibles different than insuring your other property? Well, regular property insurance usually only covers the material cost of your possessions. A stolen flat-screen TV can be replaced by a new one and a flooded wooden floor can be plucked out and laid again. This is because the TV and the wooden tiles are easily replaceable — a rare coin or an exclusive signed photo of your beloved late opera singer are not.

For that reason, valuable collectibles must be assessed and insured separately, under a Collectibles insurance policy. There are a couple of insurers with collectibles insurance in their portfolio in Canada.

Extent of Coverage

When you do insure your collection, consider going for a so-called ‘all-risk’ policy. This kind will cover you not only in the obvious cases of theft, fire, or flood, but also for normal wear and tear, nuclear destruction, and even mysterious disappearance.

What is more, you may conveniently extend your coverage upon new items in your collection. If you want to be really prudent, you may want to call your insurer before you pick your piece up, just so you are already covered on the way home!

Price Appraisals

In most cases, it is actually not necessary to have your collection valued by a professional appraiser, contrary to popular belief. It would be pretty pricey, as professional appraisers have to be paid for their job, and impractical, since you would have to get an appraisal on every new piece in your collection.

While you needn’t use a professional appraiser, you do need to value your collection reasonably. On the one hand, correct valuation will optimize your monthly or yearly premiums; on the other hand, it will speed up the claiming process. In other words, if you bloat the value of your collection, you will risk that the heightened insurance fees will never even pay off.

There are numerous guidelines for correct self-valuation of most types of collectibles. It is often best to explore the market for collectibles and/or talk to other knowledgeable collectors to get an idea of your collection’s worth.

Documentation

What is more important than an appraisal is a detailed inventory of your items and proofs of ownership where applicable. You should keep any receipts from the purchases and sales of your items, as well as pictures or videos of your entire collection. This, again, will help expedite the claim process if worse comes to worst.

Funny Cases of Collectibles Insurance

Insurance clients sometimes produce very interesting stories of their collections’ loss or destruction. Favourites are cases involving house pets, where mad cats or crazy dogs eat paintings, knock over statues or wooden ships, or bite and wet stamps. Many clients like to drive with their collection placed on their car’s roof, or upset their girlfriends and wives, who then tend remove the collections.

My words of advice: please don’t sneeze at your valuable paintings, or show them off to friends who are allergic to your pets.
